Lemosho Route:

There are several routes up Kilimanjaro and Lemosho is one of the least popular but is nevertheless a fantastic choice, especially if you value a quiet route away from the crowds. The initial section through mountain forest still offers a very real chance of encountering wildlife (sightings of small antelope are virtually unique to the Lemosho and Rongai routes). The Lemosho route offers stunning views and quiet trails and can be the best option during the peak season.

The traditional Lemosho route joins with the busy Machame on day 3, but this variant uses a unique Team Kilimanjaro route developed in 2008 that preserves the sense of wilderness right up to the night before summit when you join the Marangu route at School Hut for the summit bid via Gilman’s Point.

The trek starts at Lemosho Start Point and routes via the Shira Plateau and around the Northern Slopes of Kilimanjaro offering classic views of the Kenyan plains to the NW, North and NE. Lemosho is not possible during the rainy months (April, May, November) when the conditions of roads make vehicle passage to the start point unsafe. This trek includes airport transfers and a night’s accommodation at both ends of the trek in Arusha.

Adventurous trekkers can choose the outstanding Excel crater camp option, which includes an extra night after summiting, camping in the crater. It will be cold and the effects of altitude are strong, but the reward is a once in a lifetime experience in a truly alien environment of glaciers, ash-pits and wilderness.

The Lemosho Route can be completed on a six, seven or eight-day itinerary. The six day is not recommended as it doesn’t provide sufficient time to acclimatise. We do recommend the seven, eight, ten or twelve-day treks on the Lemosho (Depending with your physical condition, time and budget) . Both variations are great for acclimatisation and of course, increases the probability of summit success.

Lemosho FAQ

The Lemosho route is approximately 70 km/ 42 miles from gate to gate. It is designed for physically fit people with some hiking experience.

Lemosho route is generally considered one of the ‘easier’ climbs because of it’s great acclimatisation profile. It has great ‘climb high, sleep low’ opportunities. Put simply, with the right Kilimanjaro preparation anyone can climb this route

The Lemosho route is known for being one of the most beautiful Kilimanjaro routes. You walk through lush rainforest on the first couple of days. Spotting large wildlife, like antelopes, is not very common but possible!

We can measure each day in walking hours rather than kilometers. Most days, other than the summit day, will begin with breakfast around 6:30 AM and departure at 7 AM. You will walk four to five hours with a break for lunch followed by another hour or two of hiking in the afternoon. These days are not long or difficult and you will be advised to walk slowly.

Yes, you can obtain it in advance or on arrival in Tanzania at the international airport.

Our recon success rate for each route is as follows:
Lemosho Route 8 – 12 –  97%
Marangu Route –  90%
Machame 9-day  – 95%

Porters carry all gear except for your daypack, which usually weighs around 10 lb on Western Approach, Umbwe, and Grand Traverse treks, and around 20 lb on Machame treks. Personal porters can be employed to carry your day pack for an additional cost.

Fully 98% of Trip Insight Tanzania trekkers reach Uhuru Peak (Mt. Kilimanjaro’s summit).

You don’t need to be an athlete or have experience with technical mountaineering, but you do need to be active, committed to training prior to the climb and ready to persevere on the mountain.
